A fire killed 12 young chickens and destroyed a barn near Maytown Monday afternoon.

West Thurston Fire Authority responded to a property near 140th Avenue Southwest and Tilley Road at about 1:30 p.m., according to Lt. Lanette Dyer, public information officer for West Thurston Fire Authority.

The owners of the property had moved approximately six months prior and many of their belongings were still in the barn, according to Dyer. The fire was reported by a neighbor who saw the smoke and called 911. The neighbor and owner then began to move the animals away from the immediate area.

They were unable to enter the barn to get the chickens because of the intense smoke and flames, according to Dyer. By the time firefighters arrived, the barn was fully involved and was threatening a tree line.

The barn and its contents were a total loss. A total of 25 firefighters from West Thurston Fire Authority, East Olympia Fire District 6, McLane/Black Lake, Gibson Valley and Tenino responded to the blaze.
