Chehalis Council Dissolves Outdated Library Board

The Chehalis City Council agreed Monday night to eliminate the five-person Chehalis Timberland Library Board, which no longer serves a purpose after the city joined the Timberland Regional Library District in 1975.

Library Manager Corine Aiken said the former members are encouraged to join the Friends of the Chehalis Timberland Library group to continue their work as advocates for the library.

Each of the Timberland Regional Library District has a “Friends” group, which is a nonprofit organization that supports the mission of the TRL and provides support for special projects and activities of the library.

Aiken said the former library board stopped meeting regularly around the time the Vernetta Smith Chehalis Timberland Library was built.

In 1975, the library board went from a governing body of the library to an advisory body when the city joined the Timberland Regional Library District, Aiken said.

During a special library election held on Nov 2, 1982, the citizens voted 1,722 to 537 that the city be annexed to and be a part of the Timberland Regional Library District of Grays Harbor, Lewis, Mason, Pacific and Thurston counties, according to city documents.

The county has two representatives on the district board, both appointed by the Lewis County Commission.
