A 1-year-old Tenino girl died Tuesday morning after she was hit by a car in her family’s driveway, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.

Lt. Cliff Ziesemer from the sheriff’s office described it as a “tragic accident” in which no one was at fault.

The car was driven by a 21-year-old woman who arrived at the residence on the 16000 block of Melville Street off of Old Highway 99 near Tenino at about 8:15 a.m. to pick up children for a carpool, Ziesemer said.

The car was parked in the driveway, as the 1-year-old, her mother and another child came outside the residence, he said. The 1-year-old was playing in the front yard while the adults talked.

When the woman, who had three other children in the car, went to leave, she asked the other woman about the location of the 1-year-old.

“They assumed she went in the house because they didn’t see her,” he said.

Ziesemer said the driver pulled the car forward a bit. The child had been in front of the car and was run over, killing her instantly.

The driver is not believed to have been at fault and there is no indication of any substance abuse, he said. The investigation into the circumstances of the accident has already concluded.

“It’s just a really tragic accident,” he said.
