Wildfire Preparedness Day Encourages Citizens to Reduce Risks

Whether its raking leaves and pine needles away from a home, mowing the lawn or pruning trees, Washingtonians are encouraged to participate in the second annual National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day on Saturday.

A press release from the Office of the State Fire Marshal says efforts will help protect homes, neighborhoods and communities from wildfire risk. The day is one for all ages to participate in projects for their homes or communities.

A list of project ideas for Preparedness Day, which is sponsored by Fire Adapted Communities and State Farm, reminds the public to get permission to work on others’ property and review safety information at http://firewise.org.

Ideas include making sure wood piles are at least 30 feet away from structures, disposing of downed tree limbs, removing items stored under decks and porches and distributing wildfire safety information that can be found at www.nfpa.org.
