Flowers Planted in Chehalis for Breast Cancer Awareness

The Chehalis Community Renaissance Team is offering local businesses and residents a chance to sponsor the planting of pink, purple and white annuals along North Market Boulevard to raise breast cancer awareness.

Renaissance member Patty Kaija, of Kaija’s Garden and Pet, began planting the annuals on Memorial Day weekend. She planted the flowers at the base of trees in pots throughout the downtown area.

As more people sponsor the planting, Kaija said she would like to add the colorful flowers to the nearly 30 islands and the other tree pots.

To sponsor an island or planter of annuals, the Chehalis Renaissance Team is asking for $50. If a business or individual would prefer to plant the annuals themselves, a 20 percent discount will be given at Kaija’s Garden and Pet for the pink, purple and white annuals to stay within the color scheme.

Kaija, who came up with the idea, said she thought the flowers would help honor those who have been lost or are currently fighting the disease.

Over the past year, the Chehalis Renaissance had an irrigation system added to the pots and islands, and while the shrubs will be watered, the irrigation system may not reach the annuals. The Chehalis Renaissance asks sponsors of the islands to make sure the annuals stay watered and weeded.

All the sponsors and honorees will be recognized on the Chehalis Community Renaissance webpage and Facebook site, the nonprofit organization said.

Kaija said the Renaissance Team will offer sponsorships until all the islands and planters are taken.
