Plastic Debris in Puget Sound the Focus of Next Lyceum Talk

Posted

The abundance of microplastics and their potential impact is the topic of the next Lyceum discussion at Centralia College Wednesday, April 23.

Julie E. Masura, a research affiliate faculty member at the Center for Urban Waters at the University of Washington-Tacoma, will speak on the topic. Researchers from the center have developed methods to collect and process ocean samples, including water, sediments and beach material, to try to determine the amount of microplastics in the ocean environment.

Microplastics are defined as small particles of plastic, and they have been found in every water sample collected in the Puget Sound.

The Lyceum presentation will take place from 1 to 1:50 p.m. April 23 in Washington Hall room 103. It is free and open to the public; current students can attend Lyceum as part of Humanities 286, good for one credit.
