‘Frankenstein,’ ‘Dracula’ Coming to Fox Theatre
Historic Fox Theatre Restorations will be showing a double feature at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Fox Theatre in downtown Centralia.
On the screen at both times will be the 1931 classics “Frankenstein” and “Dracula.”
“Frankenstein:” An obsessed scientist, Dr. Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive), attempts to create life by assembling a creature from body parts of the deceased. Aided by his loyal misshapen assistant, Fritz (Dwight Frye), Frankenstein succeeds in animating his monster (Boris Karloff), but, confused and traumatized, it escapes into the countryside and begins to wreak havoc. Frankenstein searches for the elusive being, and eventually must confront his tormented creation. The film is rated PG.
“Dracula:” After a harrowing ride through the Carpathian mountains in eastern Europe, Renfield enters castle Dracula to finalize the transferral of Carfax Abbey in London to Count Dracula, who is in actuality a vampire. Renfield is drugged by the eerily hypnotic count, and turned into one of his thralls, protecting him during his sea voyage to London.
After sucking the blood and turning the young Lucy Weston into a vampire, Dracula turns his attention to her friend Mina Seward, daughter of Dr. Seward, who then calls in a specialist, Dr. Van Helsing, to diagnose the sudden deterioration of Mina’s health. Van Helsing, realizing that Dracula is indeed a vampire, tries to prepare Mina’s fiance, John Harker, and Dr. Seward for what is to come and the measures that will have to be taken to prevent Mina from becoming one of the undead.
Admission for both movies is $10 per person, $8 for members and $25 per family (three to four persons).

STEM Booster Club Plans Breakfast Fundraiser
The Chehalis STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Booster Club is hosting a flapjack fundraiser to benefit the SWAG (Students With a Goal) 4060 and SWAG Jr. 10244 robotics teams on Saturday.
The fundraiser will be a breakfast 8-10 a.m. at the Chehalis Applebee’s, 1670 NW Louisiana Ave. Tickets are $10 each. Breakfast includes pancakes with syrup and butter, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, milk, juice and coffee.
Tickets are available at the door; walk-ins are encouraged.You can also get tickets from booster club and robotics team members, or by contacting the STEM Booster Club by email at chehalisstem@gmail.com.
The robotics teams are gearing up for the 2016-17 season with hopes of returning to the FIRST Robotics World Championships.

Massachusetts Man to Speak at Meeting of Mycological Society
Lawrence Millman will be the featured speaker at the Tuesday meeting of the Southwest Washington Mycological Society.
Lawrence is a mycologist from Cambridge, Massachusetts, and author of 16 books, including “Last Places,” “Hiking to Siberia,” “Fascinating Fungi of New England” and “Giant Polypores & Stoned Reindeer.” He has studied and inventoried fungi in places as diverse as Greenland, Belize, Labrador, Costa Rica, Western Samoa, Iceland, Panama and Nantucket Island.
Non-members are welcome to attend. Bring your unidentified mushrooms in for expert analysis.

Documentary to Examine End-of-Life Planning
Providence Centralia Hospital and Lewis County Senior Programs are presenting a free screening of the documentary “Being Mortal” on 1-3 p.m. Wednesday at the Twin Cities Senior Center.
After the screening, audience members can participate in discussion and a guided conversation on how to take concrete steps to identify and communicate wishes about end-of-life goals and preferences.
“Being Mortal” delves into the hopes of patients and families facing terminal illness. The film investigates the practice of caring for the dying and explores the relationships between patients and their doctors. It follows a surgeon, Dr. Atul Gawande, as he shares stories from the people and families he encounters.
When Gawande’s own father gets cancer, his search for answers about how best to care for the dying becomes a personal quest. The film sheds light on how a medical system focused on a cure often leaves out the sensitive conversations that need to happen so a patient’s true wishes can be known and honored at the end.
“Being Mortal” underscores the importance of people planning ahead and talking with family members about end-of-life decisions.
Seventy percent of Americans say they would prefer to die at home, but nearly 70 percent die in hospitals and institutions. Ninety percent of Americans know they should have conversations about end-of-life care, yet only 30 percent have done so.

CC Professor to Talk About Apportionment and the Electoral College
Dan Taylor, associate professor of mathematics at Centralia College, will be talking about representative apportionment and the Electoral College during a Lyceum presentation at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the college.
Taylor will first discuss methods the United States has used to apportion representatives to the states. As part of this discussion he will talk about the issues and problems that have been found. He will bring these ideas to the Electoral College and discuss how the Electoral College was part of the compromise that brought this nation together, and why it is still part of our election process.
Taylor’s talk will be in Washington Hall 103, and is free and open to the public. Lyceums may also be taken as a one-credit humanities course.
