Silent Film About Indigenous People of British Columbia to Be Shown
“In the Land of the Head Hunters,” a 1914 silent film fictionalizing the world of the Kwakwaka’wakw peoples of the Queen Charlotte Strait region of the Central Coast of British Columbia, will be shown 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, Centralia.
The film was written and directed by Edward S. Curtis and acted entirely by Kwakwaka’wakw native people. Selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
The story of love and revenge among the Kwakwaka’wakw of British Columbia, Motana, the son of a great chief, goes on a vigil journey. Through fasting and hardships he hopes to gain supernatural strength that will make him a chief as powerful as his father. Curtis showcases the Kwakwaka’wakw’s magnifcent war canoes, totem poles, rituals, costumes and dancing.
The video will followed by one hour of discussion about the treatment of indigenous people during the history of the United States.
Everyone is invited and welcome to share their thoughts. If possible it is recommended to read “An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States,” by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, prior to the program.

Artists to Put Works on Display During ARTrails Studio Tour
Artists throughout the region will have their works on display Saturday and Sunday, then again the following weekend, as part of the ARTtrails of Southwest Washington 2016 Studio Tour.
Participants will have an opportunity to drive through the region’s historic communities and wander the back roads of Lewis County. Along the way, they will be able to watch artists at work and help celebrate ARTrail’s 14th year.
The Studio Tour is free and self-guided. Studios will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A Studio Guide contains artist information and a map to the studios.

Pow Wow Will Be at Toledo High School
The 17th annual Pow Wow, honoring the spirit of all Cowlitz people, will be coming Saturday to Toledo High School.
Grand Entries will be at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. A salmon dinner will be served at 5 p.m. Festivities will include a dance competition and cash prizes.
Head Woman Dancer will be Tanna Engdahl, of the Cowlitz Tribe, and Head Man Dancer will be Mark Sison, of the Nisqually Tribe.
Other performers are The Allen Family Singers, Host Drum, and Grey Eagle, Honor Drum.
Emcee will be Don Ryan, of the Cowlitz Tribe. Arena director is Ed Wulf, of the Yupik-Athabascan Tribe.
There is no admission fee, although donations are accepted.

Feed the Hungry Golf Tourney Coming to Riverside
The YWAM Faith Harvest Helpers Feed the Hungry Golf Tournament will be Saturday at Riverside Golf Club, Chehalis.
YWAM-Faith Harvest Helpers is a faith-based interdenominational gleanings organization dedicated to feeding hungry people both locally and globally. It’s purpose is “to demonstrate God’s love by using every opportunity to build relationships and disciple people.”
Cost is $100 per player, with four-person teams. Registration can be made online at www.ywamfhhwa.org. The cost includes a round of golf, cart, polo shirt, lunch, prizes and more.
Registration deadline is Sept. 12.

Writers Conference Set for Centralia College
The Third Annual Southwest Washington Writers Conference at Centralia College Saturday will offer a choice menu of workshops for writers of all levels, taught by award-winning authors.
Jennifer Lauck, Portland author of the New York Times bestselling memoir “Blackbird,” will keynote the event, Zander said. Lauck’s poignant childhood memoir has been translated into 22 languages and earned her appearances on “Oprah,” “BBC News” and “The Rosie O’Donnell Show.”In addition to her keynote address on artistic perseverance, Lauck will teach three sessions on writing essays, memoirs and novels.
For lovers of mystery, Seattle writer Mary Daheim, author of more than 60 bed-and-breakfast cozies and mysteries, will discuss her 33-year publishing journey and offer workshops on her genre and developing character.
Melanie Dobson, Carol Award winner of 15 historical and romantic suspense novels, will return to the Centralia conference to lead her popular session on “Writing Historical Fiction for Contemporary Readers.” She, Amish fiction writer Leslie Gould and author Terri Reed will head a panel on navigating the publishing world.
Independent publishing will spotlight sessions taught by Kyle Pratt, of Adna; Carolyn McCray, of Centralia; and Oregonian Maggie Lynch, while marketing expert Veronika Noize, of Vancouver, Washington, will repeat her workshop “Marketing Your Work and Yourselves” and present a new one on social media strategies.
Young adult and sci-fi author Jill Williamson, who won a Christy Award for her first novel, plans to teach “Punctuation 101” and “Writing Great Villains.” Poet Jennifer Messing, of Portland, will lead a session on magazine writing amid a busy life.
The Southwest Washington Writers Conference will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Walton Science Center at Centralia College. The $85 fee includes lunch.
For a $45 fee, Shanna Paxton Photography will be available to take cover and publication photos.
Proceeds will benefit the Centralia Fox Theater restoration.

Oakville Harvest Festival Will be at Event Center
The Oakville Community Harvest Festival will be 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the Oakville Regional Event Center, 7000 U.S. Highway 12, next to the high school.
The event will include a display of farm life (goats, chickens and rabbits), zucchini decorating contest, fresh apple cider, pumpkin painting, Oakville fried zucchini and dessert auction.
There also will be numerous exhibits, including black powder shooting, spinning wool into yarn, blacksmithing and metal sculpture, beekeeping, home food preservation, quilts and home art and exhibits by local artists.
Games for all ages will include tug of war, three-legged race, apple bobbing and wheelbarrow race.
An array of vendors will be showing homemade arts and crafts.
Music is being provided by Virgil Stortroen.

Dog Show Coming to SWW Fairgrounds
The Timberland Valley Dog Fanciers Association is hosting a dog show Saturday and Sunday at the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds.
Spectator admission is free, with judging starting at approximately 8 a.m.
There are approximately 1,000 dogs entered.
In addition, on Friday there will be independent shows for Pomeranian, schipperke, Chinese crested and Shiba Inu breeds.
The TVDFA was founded in 1973 and is licensed by the American Kennel Club.

‘Batman’ to Be Shown at Corbet Theatre
Historic Fox Theatre Restorations will be screening “Batman,” the next film in its 2016 Film Series, at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday.
The film will be shown at Centralia College’s Corbet Theatre because of the ongoing restoration of the Fox Theatre.
Gotham City crime boss Carl Grissom (Jack Palance) effectively runs the town but there’s a new crime fighter in town — Batman (Michael Keaton). Grissom’s right-hand man is Jack Napier (Jack Nicholson), a brutal man who is not entirely sane.
After falling out between the two, Grissom has Napier set up with the police and Napier falls to his apparent death in a vat of chemicals. However, he soon reappears as The Joker and starts a reign of terror in Gotham City.
Meanwhile, reporter Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger) is in the city to do an article on Batman. She soon starts a relationship with Batman’s everyday persona, billionaire Bruce Wayne. The film is rated PG-13.
