Chehalis Tyke Scrambles to Victory at KELA-KMNT Diaper Derby

It was unfair, really …

Think Usain Bolt racing Chris Christie or Katie Ledecky swimming against Shaquille O’Neal.

That’s how much 1-year-old Blakelynn Land smoked her competitors Thursday to win the 25th Annual KELA-KMNT Diaper Derby at the Southwest Washington Fair.

Like Bolt, the Chehalis tyke began her heats nonchalantly, hanging back just long enough to give her challengers false confidence. Then suddenly — and we’re talking oooh baby — she kicked into third gear and raced home on churning hands and knees … and with a Bolt-like smile.

“Her brother Gage likes to hold her sometimes, so she’s learned how to get away fast,” laughed Blakelynn's mom Tori Land after the race.

And though Blakelynn clearly had the fastest chops Thursday, she was in plenty of cutie-pie company — and that included the derby’s second- and third-place winners.

Second place went to Centralia girl Kendra Zigler, 10 months (Mom Megan Zigler), and third place to Chehalis racer Cylas Zuber, 9 months (Mom Dawn Zuber).
