Editor’s Best Bet: Bicycle Ride to Run from Centralia to Chehalis

A bicycle ride from Centralia to Chehalis is being held Saturday.

The ride is over a flat 7-mile course that begins in Centralia’s Washington Park and ends near the Fred Hess Kitchen in Recreation Park in Chehalis.

Check in/registration will be 8:30-9 a.m. at Washington Park. The ride will be 9-10:30 a.m. After the ride, there will be pizza, games and prize drawings at Recreation Park.

All youths under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Youths under age 18 who are not riding with an adult must be picked up in a vehicle by 11:30 a.m. at the Fred Hess Kitchen.

Payment (cash or check) and registration may be made at Centralia Parks & Recreation, 118 W. Maple St., Centralia, 360-330-7688, or Chehalis Parks & Recreation, 1321 S. Video to Feature Works of Howard Zinn

A video about the work of Howard Zinn, a historian, playwright and activist, will be shown at 7 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church, Centralia.

Zinn has written more than 20 books, but his most well known is “The People’s History of the United States.”

The program sponsored by Fire Mountain Chapter Fellowship of Reconciliation and Veterans For Peace Chapter 109.

Tenino to Host Oregon Trail Days

Oregon Trail Days, an annual citywide event that draws artists, food and craft vendors, history enthusiasts, rock collectors and musicians from throughout the Pacific Northwest to help us celebrate the region’s history, will be in Tenino Friday-Sunday.

On Saturday, a parade will commence at 11 a.m. A Kids Zone / Dunk Tank will be 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday. There will be an inflatable obstacle course, bounce houses, pony rides and more. Proceeds will support Raise for Rowyn.

A traditional salmon bake will be 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the corner of Olympia Street and Park Avenue. Cost is $10 for salmon and sides, and $1 for beverages. The Chehalis Tribe and Lucky Eagle Casino cook the salmon in a open fire pit using cedar. Proceeds will go to the Creekside Conservancy.

The Tenino Young at Heart Theater will be presenting “The Addams Family” at 7 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. at Tenino High School. Admission is $12 for adults, and $10 for students and seniors.

The 40th Gib Isaakson Memorial Black Powder Shoot will begin both Saturday and Sunday at 9 a.m. Saturday’s events conclude with a potluck and pig roast.

Cooks Hill Church Plans Car Show

Cooks Hill Community Church is hosting a Show Your Ride Car Show 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the church, 2400 Cooks Hill Road, Centralia,

There will be live entertainment from noon to 3 p.m. Food and coffee will be available to purchase.

Trophies will given away in many car show categories, and there will be a raffle drawing throughout the event. Those who want to participate in the raffle are asked to bring a non-perishable food item. All food items will be donated to the Lewis County Gospel Mission.

Each donated food item equals one entry in the raffle.

Historian to Talk About State’s Role in WWI

Historian Lorraine McConaghy will be talking about Washington’s role in World War 1 during a presentation at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Centralia Timberland Library.

The talk begins with the prohibition referendum of 1914 through Seattle’s General Strike in 1919. The program begins with an illustrated introduction  to the war’s themes before offering a “Readers’ Theater” script that is read aloud together.
