Lenticular clouds hover over Mount Rainier at sunset on Tuesday in Toledo. Nearly a week of sunny weather is expected to end on Wednesday as rain is forecast across Western Washington through Saturday. The lens-shaped clouds are formed at high altitudes, when a moist air flow encounters obstructions — such as mountains or buildings — which disrupt the air flow and create standing waves in the atmosphere. These waves form on the downwind side and as the moisture in the air condenses, it forms these odd-shaped clouds.
