A semi truck caught fire on Interstate 5 near the northbound ramp for 71 Exit south of Chehalis on Tuesday.

The driver told responders he thinks the fire started in the refrigeration unit attached to the front of the trailer behind the cab, Lewis County Fire District 5 Chief Gregg Petersen said.

The driver had pulled onto the shoulder of the exit and was standing away from the truck when firefighters arrived. The cab was fully engulfed and the front-end of the trailer had started on fire upon arrival, Petersen said.

District 5 in Napavine was the lead crew on scene for the call that came in at 12:42 p.m. Fire District 15 in Winlock also responded.

Petersen said firefighters had the blaze knocked down in about 10 minutes. Mop up work continued past 1:30 p.m. No one was injured in the fire. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
