Winlock Can’t Keep Up with Naselle on Senior Night

Though the Winlock girls basketball team put up a fight through two quarters, a tough third quarter saw Naselle run away with a road win over the Cardinals on their senior night, 61-39.

The Cardinals honored seniors Kiya Peppers and Angie Gil pregame, and the pair had a strong game in their final home games, with Peppers scoring nine points to go along with five boards and Gil hauling in 10 rebounds.

“I want to thank our seniors Kiya Peppers and Angie Gil for being great leaders and for also being so coachable,” Winlock coach Dracy McCoy said. “It was great to honor them tonight at our senior night.”

The Cardinals trailed by just five at the half, but a 19-10 third quarter run saw the Comets separate for the win.

Kindyl Kelly scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed six rebounds, and Natalie Cardenas scored 10 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and snatched away five steals for Winlock.

“The team played a strong first half but ran out of gas in the second half,” McCoy said. “Natalie Cardenas had another all-around strong game and played excellent defense. Kindyl did a great job getting to the hoop and getting fouled.”

Lauren Katyryniuk led the visitors with a game-high 23 points.

The Cardinals have a short turnaround in a return to Central 2B league play, when they take on Wahkiakum in Cathlamet on Monday.
