The Bearcat girls tennis team swept the Wolves at home for its seventh win of the season at home on Wednesday, bringing the varsity team’s record to 7-3 for overall, 6-1 in league play.

In first singles action, W.F. West’s Mari Ceesay defeated Black Hills’ Cassidy Pearson, 6-0, 6-1. At second singles, the Bearcats’ Viviana Ibanez earned the double bagel, 6-0, 6-0, against Aurora Glassburn for the Wolves. At third singles, W.F. West’s Alayna Leal topped Black Hills’ Kirsta Skinner 6-3, 6-4.

“Alayna Leal did a really nice job,” said head coach Jack State. “She had to really battle.”

In the night’s most competitive match, drawing oohs and aahs from supporters of both teams who watched, W.F. West first doubles team Laura Yip and Katelyn Wood took down Black Hills’ Stella Moore and Chloe Witcraft 7-6 (7-2 in a set tiebreaker), 6-3.

That match lasted about two hours and fifteen minutes.

“The first doubles team with their win was really nice because that black hills doubles team, I believe that was their first loss,” State said. “(Wood and Yip) improved their play a little bit in the second set and I think they have several things they could work on (coming out of the match).”

The Bearcats also won in JV action, winning six of the seven matches.

“I am really happy with this team. It’s got three seniors. … only two juniors. The rest are freshman and sophomores. They’re a young team,” State said, later adding, “As a team in general they’ve had a lot of growth, improvement. I really like the potential.”

The Bearcats head to Washougal for their next match on Thursday.
