The W.F. West boys soccer team opened its season on a high note on Thursday night, as the Bearcats came away with a 3-0 victory on the road against River Ridge.
“The boys played even better than I expected this early in the season,” W.F. West coach Allen Anderson said. “We were nervous to start, but really found our chemistry after the first 10 minutes.”
Rafa Mendez opened the scoring with a goal in the 20th minute, and the 1-0 scoreline held until halftime.
In the 48th minute, Israel Lopez Cruz scored to double the advantage, and Adrian Jaimes put it out of reach with a goal in the 66th.
Noel Montenegro had the clean sheet in net.
Anderson was proud of the goalscorers and Montenegro, and he also made sure to commend a few other players who stood out to him throughout the night.
“Really proud of freshman Derek Galeana and Julian Casimiro, they were excellent in their first high school game,” Anderson said. “Gage Grisham was a standout on our backline who did a great job playing in a new role.”
The Bearcats (1-0) will return to Chehalis, where they’ll host Mountain View in their home opener on Monday.
