The W.F. West girls basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Thursday, losing a late lead in a 68-65 loss to 4A Tahoma in its first game at the Top of the Peak Tournament.
The two sides were even through the first two quarters, but W.F. West took a nine-point lead entering the fourth quarter.
Tahoma’s Bailey Nettleton caught fire in the final frame though, hitting four threes to lead the Bears’ comeback. In the fourth, Tahoma outscored W.F. West 28-16.
“We had a chance to tie it at the end and we didn't make the shot,” W.F. West coach Kyle Karnofski said. “It would’ve been awesome to beat a 4A team that’s really good, but we competed all night. I thought that was one of our more well rounded games.”
Nettleton finished with 26 points to lead the Bears, while Julia Dalan and Dilyn Boeck scored 27 and 25, respectively, to lead the Bearcats.
“I’m really proud of them,” Karnofski said. “They were phenomenal all night.”
Despite the loss, Karnofski was proud of the effort that his team put up against a 7-1 Tahoma team, saying that it’s the type of game that hints at what’s to come for the Bearcats.
“It shows a lot of what we’re capable of,” Karnofski said. “That team was really good, and I thought we did a good job of taking a lead and weathering the storm here and there.”
W.F. West (8-1) will look to get back on track against Lake Stevens on Friday at Glacier Peak High School against 4A Lake Stevens.
