The name of the day belonged on the track, but W.F. West’s field crew had the best time at the Cardinal Relays on Saturday in Orting.

On the boys’ side of things, Lucas Hoff took second place in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet. For the girls, freshman Ariana Wheaten cleared 4 feet, 6 inches in her first high school meet, good enough to tie for second.

Hoff also tied for fourth in the boys high jump at 5 feet, 8 inches, and Caleb Busse came away with fourth in the boys discus with a huck of 127 feet, 4 inches.

The Bearcats’ best result in the titular relays came in the girls 4x400 race, where an all-underclassmen squad of sophomore Emily Mallonee and Kaija Economou and freshmen Leslie Morales and Wyatt Rogerson took third place with a time of 4:36.88.

Both W.F. West sprint medley relay teams — consisting of two 100-meter legs, a 200, and a 400 — came in eighth, with Calvin McCoy, Declan McDonald, Kade Mohoric, and Hayden Niemi coming in at 1:47.41 for the boys and Reese Mishler, Hannah Johnson, Economou, and Mallonee finishing in 2:08.76 for the girls. The Bearcat boys’ distance medley relay team of Ezra Bichard, Roman Economou, Marcello Carrasco, and Jaysen Miles — running legs of 1,200, 400, 800, and 1,600 meters, respectively — took eighth as well, finishing in 12:51.26.

W.F. West’s next action will come at Tumwater in its first 2A EvCo dual meet, in a meet moved up on the calendar to Tuesday.
