The W.F. West girls soccer team got its first dose of summer action at Montesano over the weekend, taking fourth in the six-team Battle at Rottle Field tournament.

The Bearcats started their run with a perfect Saturday, beginning with a 2-1 win over hosts Montesano thanks to a game-winning penalty kick by Jaelynn Fuentes. Lauren Kelley scored the first goal of the day.

W.F. West followed that up with a 2-0 win over 2A EvCo foe Shelton, thanks to goals from Zoey Robertson and Ashlen Gruginski.

The results put the Bearcats at the top of their three-team group heading into Sunday, but Hoquiam tripped them up in a 2-1 semifinal. That sent W.F. West to the fourth-place game, where they fell to a La Center squad — now coached by area alum Horst Malunat, and featuring more than a couple Centralia players to bolster numbers — 3-2. Robertson scored all three of W.F. West’s goals on Sunday, with Ashlen Gruginski, Lena Fragner, and Mavyn Shannon contributing assists.
