W.F. West opened its postseason run with a bang on Tuesday, blowing out Hockinson 21-0 in five innings in a district pigtail game.
The Bearcats scored seven runs in the first inning before adding 14 more in the fourth. They only had seven hits, but five of them went for extra bases. They also drew 17 walks, and Hockinson committed six errors.
“We were very patient,” W.F. West coach Kevin Zylstra said. “That was the key. We just didn’t swing at anything that we shouldn’t have. We got a lot of base runners and we were able to move people around.”
Aubree Lloyd hit her second varsity home run in just her third at-bat, a three-run blast in the fourth.
“She just hit a rocket out of here,” Zylstra said.
Tanner Tobin also hit a home run, her first varsity homer. Zylstra said that she’s hit the fence multiple times, but this one had just enough to get out.
Taylor Tobin was incredible in the circle, allowing just two hits and walking one while striking out five.
“She was just a bulldog in there,” Zylstra said. “She didn’t have her changeup working very well, but she didn’t need it today.”
W.F. West (13-8) is now into the double-elimination portion of the district tournament. The Bearcats will play Ridgefield, the GHSL’s No. 2 seed, in a quarterfinal at Recreation Park on Thursday.
“Part one is over with,” Zylstra said. “We did what we needed to do today, and now we get ready for the double-elimination part … Ridgefield is definitely a good team. It’ll be a challenge.”
