Warriors Hold on Late to Bring Down T-Birds

In a pivotal 2A Evergreen Conference matchup, the Rochester softball team stayed alive in its hopes for a district tournament bid, taking down Tumwater on the road Wednesday afternoon, 9-7.

The Warriors and Thunderbirds went back-and-forth for the majority of the game, until a 4-spot in the fifth inning gave Rochester a lead it would never relinquish.

The win keeps the Warriors tied in the league standings with Centralia for the fourth and final district playoff bid with just three league games to go.

Layna Demers pitched a complete game in the circle, allowing seven runs, with just two earned, on seven hits and four walks with three strikeouts. Demers also hit a solo home run for the Warriors.

Jessa Lenzi continued her strong play at the plate, going 1 for 2 with two RBIs, and three walks drawn. Kaylee Demers went 1 for 2 with two runs scored and a walk, as well.

Ella Ferguson pitched all seven innings for the T-Birds, giving up nine runs with seven earned on five hits and nine walks. The sophomore also struck out 12 and went 2 for 3 at the plate. Jaime Haase went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two doubles.

The loss for Tumwater means it is no longer in control of its own destiny for a league championship, now tied in the league standings with W.F. West, with the Bearcats holding the tiebreaker.

The Warriors take on W.F. West next on Friday in Rochester while Tumwater looks to get back in the win column against Centralia on Monday.
