Volunteers show up to Veterans Memorial Museum to plan repairs to field

Posted

Following last week’s fiasco when on Monday, Jan. 20, an individual trespassed on Veterans Memorial Museum property and did donuts in his pickup truck, tearing up a grass field, about 10 volunteers showed up to the museum on Saturday, Jan. 25, to begin planning a repair strategy for the field.

Initially, the individual was unknown, but he did come forward on Thursday, Jan. 23, to apologize to Museum Executive Director Chip Duncan for the incident. He also made a “sizable donation” to pay for materials and equipment needed to repair the field.

Repairs have already started as another volunteer brought equipment to help re-level the ground.

On Saturday, volunteers came and offered their own time, labor and use of equipment over the next couple months, and to help Duncan plan out the repairs.

A plan was needed as reseeding the field with grass must be done during a time when a lot of precipitation is coming to ensure it doesn’t die immediately after sprouting.

Though it is not finalized, Duncan may wait until the end of March to actually reseed the field to ensure adequate rainfall. An improved gate is also being fabricated for the area by the volunteers.
