Vikings Upset by Comets in District Semifinals

MOSSYROCK — Being in quarantine for five days paid its toll on Mossyrock.

The 1B Columbia Valley champion Vikings had just one practice heading into their district-semifinal matchup with league rival Naselle at home on Wednesday. It showed as the Vikings fell behind and couldn’t catch up in a 39-34 upset loss that now sends the Vikings to a do-or-die match on Saturday.

“We struggled offensively,” Mossyrock coach Autumn Moorcroft said. “We couldn’t find our rhythm. Naselle came out ready to play and hit their shots. We haven’t played for two weeks until tonight because we were quarantined, and had two byes and only had one practice and that was yesterday.”

It was a bad night of shooting for the Vikings, who were shot 12-39 (31%) from the field and 7-20 from the free-throw line.

Payton Torrey led the Vikings with a team-high 12 points, while Hailey Brooks added 10 and Caelyn Marshall chipped in eight.

“Hailey Brooks played really well and tough down low, and played great defense,” Moorcroft said.

Mossyrock now faces Taholah at 1 p.m., Saturday, at Montesano High School in a winner-to-regionals, loser-out match.
