The Mossyrock baseball team held on to a slim lead for a large portion of its game against Winlock on Wednesday, but the Vikings pulled away late for a convincing 8-0 win.
The Vikings opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly from Mason Atter, and the 1-0 scoreline held through four.
In the bottom of the fifth, Easton Kolb added a pair with a two-run inside-the-park home run, and the Vikings added five more in the sixth to ice it.
“We (still have) a lot to work on,” Mossyrock head coach Darren Kolb said. “Credit to Winlock, they caught everything. We’re not aggressive at the plate right now. We got better, as the game went on, baseball IQ. Just learn from your mistakes.”
The first run scored on a walk from Van Kost, then three more runners scored on a pair of wild pitches in the next at-bat. Another run came across on another wild pitch later in the inning.
Kolb finished 3 for 4 at the plate with his home run and pair of RBIs, and he also struck out four without allowing a hit in two innings on the bump.
Wylde Greisen pitched the other five innings for Mossyrock, allowing just two hits and no runs while walking three and striking out eight.
“He’s been throwing really good in the cages,” Coach Kolb said. “Probably the best I’ve seen him pitch. He matured a little bit. He puts in extra time in the offseason and it paid off for him.”
Mossyrock (2-0, 2-0 C2BL) will host Rainier on Thursday, and then it will head to Winlock (0-4, 0-3 C2BL) on Friday.
