Two adults and three children were killed in an early morning house fire in rural Thurston County, according to the sheriff’s office.

The West Thurston Fire Authority and the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a fully involved residential structure fire in the 8800 block of Sherman Valley Road SW at about 6:30 a.m., according to a news release.

“Units arrived on scene to find the home completely engulfed in flames with five people inside,” according to the sheriff’s office. “A juvenile who was visiting the home was able to make it out alive. Fire departments from all over Thurston County responded to assist in fighting the fire, but sadly those who remained inside had already died.”

Sheriff’s office detectives remain at the scene and will assist investigators from West Thurston Fire, Southeast Thurston Fire and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to determine the cause, according to the news release.

“We are saddened by this loss of life and the impact that this will have on family members and the community,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “We will provide additional information when it becomes available.”

The identities of those killed in the fire were not released.
