Tumwater’s Konrad takes sixth at district tournament

Tumwater’ Braeden Konrad followed up a second-place finish at the EvCo Tournament with another solid outing in Portland, as he wrapped up the two-day 2A District 4 Tournament by tying for sixth place to earn a state tournament bid.

Konrad was the top area golfer, shooting a 1-under 71 on Monday before shooting an 8-over 80 on Tuesday to finish with a 151.

W.F. West’s Weston Potter was the other area golfer who placed in the top 10, as he tied for tenth with a score of 160. Black Hills’ Phoenix Flores, the EvCo Tournament champion, shot a 161 to tie for 12th, and his teammate Jack Casler shot a 162 to tie for 14th. Those three are through to state with Konrad.

Beyond that, it’s a waiting game. Because many of the schools on the east side wait until spring for their golf seasons, the exact number of state bids from District 4 is currently unknown. Coaches at the league tournament said it could be as few as 17 or as many as 21 or more.

That leaves some local golfers on the bubble, including several Thunderbirds. Landen Baydo finished 17th with a 164, Zane Laposky placed 19th with a 166, and Liam Gustafson and Baylor Olson tied for 22 by shooting 168s.

A few other local athletes are right behind that group, as Black Hills’ Kendall Roberson and W.F. West’s Emmett Goodman and Jax Potter tied for 24th at 169 each.

Tyler Fagerness was Centralia’s top golfer, and he placed 31st with a 174.
