Sophomore Ashlen Gruginski pieced together a standout night for the Bearcats in a three-team Evergreen Conference league meet at Tumwater District Stadium with four event victories on Tuesday night.
She was a major part in W.F. West piling up 82.5 points to claim the team title with Black Hills notching 30.5 points. Gruginski was the lone participant in the triple jump and her best leap was 29 feet, 1.75 inches while she won the 800 and anchored both its 800 and 1,600-meter relays.
Amanda Bennett won the javelin and pole vault once again while Emily Mallonee secured a lifetime best of 51.66 seconds to win the 300 hurdles, as did Amanda Linwood in the shot put, recording a heave of 30-09.25.
Alayna Elder (200) was the other victor for the Bearcats. Black Hills had two wins in Anneliese Dale and Laura Mock in the open 100 and discus, respectively.
On the boys side, W.F. West finished with 69 points to finish behind Shelton while Black Hills tallied 38 points to place third. The Bearcats’ youth of Brian Hartwell and Chris Soha-Smith shined on the track. Hartwell swept the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs while Soha-Smith set a new PR of 2:20.81 to win the 800.
Carson Smith (shot put), Charles Lawson (discus) and Ryan Hilliker (pole vault) cruised for the Bearcats in the field events. Black Hills’ Darnell Butler jumped 38-flat to win the triple jump and record a new PR in the process while Jason Hughes won the open 400.
Those two alongside Logan Johnston and Caden Murphy teamed to triumph in the 1,600-meter relay for the Wolves.
Beavers set four PRs at home meet
Two lifetime bests for the boys and two on the girls side was the standout of Tuesday night for Tenino in a three-team Evergreen League meet featuring Montesano and Elma at home.
Tristan Von Bargen broke 54 seconds in the 400-meter dash for the first time to win the event in 53.93. Justin Schlesner coasted to a victory in the two-mile with a time of 11:35.43. Ashton Moore swept the high jump and long jump, Carson Schall claimed the 110 high hurdles and Parker Minerich secured the shot put. Both of the Beavers’ relays placed second.
Freshman Emily Battin won three events for Tenino’s girls team, running the first leg on the 400 relay and second leg on the 800 relay. Her time of 30.47 seconds in the open 200 was also a new best. Mikeala Cutlip cleared 14 feet in the long jump to win the event.
