Toledo Clinches Third in District Behind Frewing, Offensive Explosion

It might have been for a tiny amount of seeding weight, for bragging rights, or just for the love of the game. But the Toledo baseball team got the most of its district third-place game over Adna at Bearcat Baseball Stadium on Saturday, downing the Pirates 11-4.

“We’ve got 18 guys that are baseball players,” Toledo coach Mack Gaul said. “This game doesn’t necessarily mean anything, but it’s just another opportunity to play baseball. And for the seniors, they don’t know how many of those they have left; time’s ticking here. They made the most of the opportunity.”

Both teams came into the day with their tickets to the state tournament already punched, and had used the top arms in their respective staffs to punch them Friday. As such, the day belonged to the bullpens, and Toledo won thanks to a somewhat surprising contribution.

Gavin Frewing had thrown just five innings all season, with an ERA all the way up at 7.00 in that short span. Saturday, he took over in the third inning with the Riverhawks already ahead and matched that length in one outing, putting up five shutout frames.

“I knew he could throw like that, but when you have (Caiden) Schultz, you have Kaven (Winters), you have Rogan (Stanley), he doesn’t get to see the field that much,” Gaul said. “I know he throws strikes… He stepped up to the plate.”

Frewing also hit a double, while Carson Gould had two. The Riverhawks blitzed a succession of Adna relievers the whole day, adding to its lead with deep shot after deep shot.

“They just came out and hit the ball hard,” Adna coach Thad Nelson said. “I think everything they hit in the first five innings was a hit.”

Toledo and Adna will both learn their next matchups Sunday; both teams will head to a neutral site next Saturday, hoping to play two games and punch their tickets to the State semifinals.
