Todd, Tobin Lead Pirates in Shutout of Riptide

Senior Kaylin Todd and freshman Lydia Tobin each recorded braces and Adna flew past visiting Raymond-South Bend, 5-0, in 2B Central League North Division action on Wednesday.

Todd notched her first goal in the 9th minute to open the scoring and knocked another one in during the 58th minute to put the Pirates up 4-0.

“We started passing into space, and when you pass into space it’s easy to get behind people,” Todd said. “I feel like that helped a lot.”

Adna coach Horst Malunat said with a couple players out, he adjusted the lineup a bit and the team came out a little slow in the first half. The Riptide took advantage of that to push the ball into Pirates’ territory, but Adna’s defenders held strong and cleared balls to keep RSB at bay.

“Overall, especially in the second half, we got in and did a little better and finished really well,” Malunat said. “There were times in the first half where they out-hustled us, especially at the end of the first half.”

Adna’s slow start was partly due to the Riptide’s physical play, but after only leading 2-0 at the break, the Pirates woke up and went to work.

Summer White smashed one in during the 53rd minute on cleanup duty to increase the Pirates’ lead to 3-0 before Todd made it 4-0 just five minutes later to create a comfortable cushion.

Tobin, who had scored her first goal in the 13th minute, knocked another one in during the 75th to cap the scoring for the night and put the match well out of reach.

Malunat said the team still needs to work on ball movement as the team tends to focus on one side of the field or they get real direct and just kick it up the middle. Malunat wants to switch the point of attack and utilize his team’s quickness to jump on opponents.

“We’ll keep getting better,” Malunat said. “There were a lot of external things happening with kids being sick and not here that affected us a little bit at the beginning. But I thought we fought through it and did well.”

Adna improves to 6-4 overall and a perfect 5-0 in league play. The Pirates host Ilwaco at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
