Tigers Continue to Roll in Win Over Mountaineers

NAPAVINE — If you blinked at any point during Napavine’s 66-6 win over Rainier Saturday night, you might have missed a Tigers touchdown.

Gavin Parker took the Tigers’ (4-0) opening handoff 55 yards to the house, and they never looked back in another dominant league win over the Mountaineers (0-2).

“Our execution of our gameplan was really good,” Tigers coach Josh Fay said. “We were prepared for the sets they threw at us, our guys in the backend, we were able to execute multiple coverages. Ashtin Landry did a good job back there of orchestrating that. Our linebacker play was really good, defensively we were really good.”

While the Napavine offense couldn’t be stopped, Fay’s defense held Rainier quarterback Ian Sprouffske to just 91 passing yards, and nabbed five interceptions away from the Mountaineers signal caller, with two going to the house.

Just a few weeks since Sprouffske threw for nearly 300 yards and four touchdowns against Toledo in Week 1, the Mountaineers offense scored just one touchdown Saturday, a one-yard plunge from Logan Bowers in the second quarter.

Rainier played without eight critical players, including playmaker Jacob Uch, and Sean Mahaffey, who was injured against Toledo and re-aggravated that injury after one play against Napavine.

“We realize we played a banged up Rainier team, probably a lot different finish if those guys are here and healthy,” Fay said.

Ashton Demarest had a standout day behind center once again, throwing for 205 yards, rushing for 85 more, and accounting for five total touchdowns in the win. Parker was Napavine’s leading rusher, with 89 yards and a touchdown, and Austin Chapman scored twice to help lead the Tigers to their fourth straight victory.

“We didn’t see too many plays on sideline review that didn’t look executed well,” Fay said. “I don’t know what they did to prepare tonight but they looked good tonight.”

Rainier will look for its first win of the season next week against North Beach, while the Tigers look to continue to roll against Ilwaco on the road.
