Thurston County’s Weekly COVID-19 Cases Reach New High

Thurston County Public Health and Social Services reported a week over week increase of more than 500 cases in new COVID-19 infections, with the number increasing to 742 during the period of Aug. 2-8.

There were 196 new infections the previous week. The running total for infections throughout the pandemic in the county now amounts to 12,611 as of Aug. 9.

By comparison, the highest number of new cases reported in a single week was 485 during the week of Dec. 7-13, 2020.

There were no new deaths reported during the past week. Thurston County’s total deaths stand at 102, according to the health department. The percent of those infected with COVID-19 who have died stands at 1 percent for the county, according to the Washington State Department of Health (DOH).

Out of the 12,611 total county cases reported by Aug. 9, patients who have recovered or are recovering increased to 11,517, according to reports from Thurston County Public Health and Social Services.



Since last reported, there have been 37 new hospitalizations in Thurston County, according to DOH, making the total number since the start of the pandemic land at 825 as of Aug. 8.

Health care workers have administered a total of 302,177 vaccine doses countywide since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the DOH.

In neighboring Pierce County, one new death was reported and new cases have increased to 240.1 per 100,000 population as reported during the 14-day period between July 16-29, according to the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department. The total number of cases in the county have reached 55,395 as of Aug. 9 with 636 total deaths.

In Washington state, as of Aug. 8, there were 450,716 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 44,622 probable cases, a total of 27,858 people have been hospitalized due to the illness, and 6,177 people have died, according to DOH. The statewide rate of those who have died after contracting the virus has decreased to 1.2 percent. And about 8.26 million vaccine doses have been administered in the state.

Nationwide, as of press deadline, there were 35,824,258 total cases since the start of the pandemic, 614,856 confirmed deaths and about 352 million doses of vaccines were administered, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). New cases and deaths over the last 30 days have continued on an upward trajectory, CDC graphs indicated.
