Thurston County Sees 20 New COVID Deaths, 692 New Cases In One Week

Thurston County Public Health and Social Services reported 20 new COVID-19 deaths in the county during the period of Sept. 27 to Oct. 4.

The reported deaths included people in the age range of 30 to 99. The additional deaths brought Thurston County’s total to 191 as of Oct. 4.

The department also reported 692 new COVID-19 infections from Sept. 27 to Oct. 3.  

The running total of infections throughout the pandemic in the county lands at 18,282 as of Oct. 4.

This marks the ninth straight week where new cases landed above 670.

By comparison, the previous highest number of new cases reported in a single week was 485 during the week of Dec. 7-13, 2020.

The percent of those infected with COVID-19 who have died stands at 1.1 percent for the county, according to the Washington State Department of Health (DOH).



Out of the 18,282 total county cases reported by Oct. 4, patients who have recovered or are recovering increased to 16,438, according to the health department.

Since last reported, there have been 32 new hospitalizations in Thurston County, according to DOH, making the total number since the start of the pandemic land at 1,183 as of Oct. 3.

Health care workers have administered a total of 342,312 vaccine doses countywide since the beginning of the pandemic, according to DOH. That’s more than 6,000 new vaccine doses administered since last week.

In neighboring Pierce County, 18 new deaths were recorded since last reported and new cases have increased to 570 per 100,000 population as reported during the 14-day period between Sept. 12-25, according to the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department. The total number of cases in the county reached 82,959 as of Oct. 4 with 779 deaths.

In Washington state, as of Oct. 4, there were 592,680 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 75,154 probable cases, a total of 37,129 people have been hospitalized due to the illness, and 7,807 people have died, according to DOH. That’s more than 250 new deaths since reported last week. The statewide rate of those who have died after contracting the virus stands at 1.2 percent. About 9.1 million vaccine doses have been administered in the state.

Nationwide, as of press deadline, there were 43,605,623 total cases since the start of the pandemic. There were 700,176 confirmed deaths and about 397 million doses of vaccines were administered, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). New cases over the last 30 days are on a downward trend, and new deaths have appeared to plateau, CDC graphs indicated.
