The Adna boys golf team finished with a pair of advancers to Day 2 of the 1B/2B State Golf Tournament at Tumwater Valley Tuesday afternoon, with Braeden Salme and Andrew Grim making the cut for the second day, beginning Wednesday.

Salme led the Pirate pack, carding an 85, 11 strokes back of the tournament lead. Not far behind him was Andrew Grim, who shot an 87 to advance to the second day of the tournament for the first time in his career.

“Andrew missed the cut last year by one, so I’m very happy that he gets to play more golf tomorrow,” Adna coach Luke Salme said. “I’m really proud of all three boys. The goal is always to get to state, and then see what happens and if they can make enough shots to get to Day 2.”

Adna’s third state contestant, Josh McGuire, improved on the back-nine but did not make the cut for the second day, carding a 99.

“Josh may not have made the cut but his commitment to the game has been awesome to watch,” Luke Salme said. “I’m pumped he got to play here today.”

With a cutoff this year of 88 — five strokes better than the cut last year — Salme and Grim will tee off Wednesday hoping to improve their scores, with the top-10 in reach for both of them.

Grim tees off at 9:50 a.m. tomorrow, while Salme gets going at 10:10 a.m.

On the girls side, the Pirates had a single state qualifier, with Natalie Humphrey getting started in the afternoon session at Tumwater Valley. Humphrey finished with a first day score of 103, first in her group.

Finishing just ahead of the cut at 17th, three strokes ahead of the cutoff 106, Humphrey will tee off as one of the top 20 girls 1B/2B golfers in the state Wednesday at 7:40 a.m.

Sound Christian’s Makenna Kelpman is currently in first after carding a 77.
