It will officially be Police Week in the City of Chehalis beginning next Monday after Mayor Tony Ketchum issued a proclamation at Monday night’s city council meeting.

Police Week in Chehalis will begin on May 15 and end on May 21.

“This is a rough business to be in for the last few years,” Ketchum said. “Honestly, all I can say until Olympia pulls their head out … that they keep making it harder.”

Aside from making the proclamation to show support for the city’s police department, Ketchum added that Congress and President Joe Biden have also declared May 15 Peace Officers Memorial Day.

“I further call upon all citizens of Chehalis to observe May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day. Those law enforcement officers, who through their courageous deeds, have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community or have become disabled in the performance of duty,” Ketchum said.

Chehalis Police Chief Randy Kaut was present to accept the proclamation and thanked the city for the support.

“We kind of live in a society right now where law enforcement isn’t exactly the most looked up to, at least in media and politics,” Kaut said. “On behalf of the officers, I just want to thank you for the recognition, it means a lot to them.”
