Tenino Shuts Out Rochester With Versatile Attack

Five different players scored a goal for Tenino as the Beavers relentlessly put balls on goal in a 5-0 win over Rochester in the Scatter Creek Derby.

Outshooting the Warriors 36-7, and putting 22 shots on target compared to Rochester’s two, the Beavers (5-0) weren’t happy with their 2-0 lead in the first half.

“I kind of felt like we were out there playing Dikembe Mutombo, their centers had eight blocked shots in the first half,” Beavers coach Kevin Schultz said. “Credit to them, they were putting their body on the line and making plays. It was a frustrating first half.”

Emma Barr opened the scoring in the first minute for Tenino scoring off an assist from Grace Vestal, and then Megan Letts put one through the back of the net after a feed from Abby Severse, but the Beavers felt like they should have scored more.

In the second half, Tenino made an offensive adjustment. Trusting their playmakers to dribble past Rochester’s backline, the Beavers found open teammates after getting by the initial line of defense, to great success.

Vestal scored a goal of her own off another assist from Severse in the 45th minute, and six minutes later, Severse scored a goal of her own off an assist from Letts. Morgan Miner scored Tenino’s fifth and final goal in the 59th minute off a feed from Vestal.

“It really shows our versatility,” Schultz said. “That’s what we’re hanging our hat on right now. No one can prepare for one player because we have a lot of different weapons.”

Schultz was also complimentary of Rochester, saying despite the lead, the Warriors played hard throughout and put a lot of pressure on the Beavers in rainy conditions.

The Warriors are still looking for their first win of the season.

“Tenino is good on both ends, plus they’re physical,” Rochester coach Ken Matthews said. “We had a tough time getting anything going.”

Matthews named senior midfielder Amerika Jones Rochester’s Woman of the Match. Playing two keepers Saturday afternoon, the Warriors combined for nine saves.

“Rochester played hard throughout, the first half they were putting their bodies on the line and they played really hard,” Schultz said. “They definitely were putting pressure on us throughout the rain.”

Rochester will look for its first win on the road against Montesano on Tuesday, and Tenino will take on undefeated White Salmon next Thursday on the road.
