Tenino girls soccer went undefeated at the annual Kick in the Grass Tournament this past weekend, finishing with three wins and a tie to claim the championship.

Kick in the Grass, one of the longest-running prep soccer tournaments in the state, is a club-team tourney that holds games at multiple locations across south Thurston County.

The Beavers, made up of a blend of returning players as well as some incoming freshmen, scored 12 goals while allowing six over the four games they played.

Morgan Miner was the top scorer in the tournament, leading the Beavers with four goals and one assist; Grace Vestal scored twice and dished out three assists; Abby Severse had two goals and an assist; Holly Thoren knocked in two goals; Megan Letts had a goal and an assists; Kamryn Oliveira and Trinity Tafoya each handed out an assists and Tafoya added 13 saves in goal.

Tafoya made seven saves in the final match against Fire FC, a team comprised of recently-graduated Tumwater High School players. Fire FC scored in the second minute on a goa; from Rianna Geathers. Miner responded with a goal in the fifth minute to tie it up for the Beavers.

The game was back-and-forth from there on out with the two squads ending the game with a 1-1 tie, which gave Tenino the tournament title based on having more total points in the tourney.

“In the end, the team was able to do what was needed, knowing we only needed a draw to win the championship,” Tenino coach Kevin Schultz said. “Andee Schaffran and Kayla Feltus did a great job of controlling the back line. Other bright spots in the tournament were incoming freshman Holly Thoren with two goals, Vestal in midfield, incoming sophomore Kendra Cutlip and incoming freshman MJ Gallwas in defense.

The full team included Miner, Vestal, Severse, Letts, Tafoya, Oliveira, Cutlip, Gallwas, Alivia Hunter, Andee Schaffran, Grace Vestal, Kayla Feltus, Trista Shoop, Nicole Fralick, Elizabeth Disken, Rilee Jones, Abigail Archibald, Holly Thoren, Paisley Garcia, Natalie Lucero and Kaycee Jones.
Tenino hosts a six-team tournament this week, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Teams will include Rochester, Adna, W.F. West, Yelm and Olympia.
