A short-handed Tenino girls basketball team did what it could on Wednesday in Hoquiam, but the Beavers fell to the Grizzlies 46-21.
Four of Tenino’s five upperclassmen missed the game with an illness, leaving the Beavers down multiple regulars.
“We just didn’t have a lot of bodies,” Tenino coach Kirsi Gofinch said. “I was proud of them for pushing through though. They never quit.”
The Beavers were down 16-2 after one and 27-6 at halftime, but they did play better in the second half after some adjustments.
“They came out and played really hard,” Gofinch said. “It was really cool to see our girls go with something completely different.”
Charley Jones led the Beavers in scoring with nine points, while Kylie Gonia scored seven and Georgia Gore added four. Gore also came down with seven rebounds, as did Keira Laughlin, and Holly Thoren grabbed six while adding a point.
Tenino (4-15, 1-6 1A Evergreen) will now turn towards its second matchup with Rochester. A win would clinch a district tournament spot, while a loss would force the two teams to turn to tiebreakers to determine which team receives the postseason bid.
“I’m looking forward to it,” Gofinch said. “They all get fired up and excited about playing Rochester … I think we’re gonna have some people step up.”
