The Port of Olympia commission recently awarded $10,000 apiece to Tenino, Bucoda, Rainier and Yelm as part of its Small Cities Program meant to help finance economic development in more rural areas of Thurston County.

According to a press release, Tenino plans to put its $10,000 toward construction of a shaded pavilion featuring bike racks, water bottle stations and equipment to make minor bicycle repairs. Bucoda is expected to buy items related to the expansion of its annual Boo-coda haunted house and other city events.

The port announced the contributions at a March 25 commission meeting. It launched the Small Cities Program in 2010 and has contributed previously to the purchase of signage for Tenino and the renovation of the Oddfellows Building in Bucoda.

Yelm plans to use its funding to purchase emergency notification message boards. Rainier will put its share into ongoing renovations to the historic Rainier School and the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.
