Two Chehalis teenagers were arrested early Thursday morning after they allegedly broke into a convenience store in Centralia and one of them jumped into the Skookumchuck River to avoid arrest then punched the officer who rescued him in the face.

The two boys, ages 13 and 14, are accused of breaking into and stealing vape pens and oils from a convenience store in the 600 block of Harrison Avenue early Thursday morning. The store owner reportedly saw the two juveniles riding bicycles past the store a couple hours later and called the police.

Officers with the Centralia Police Department responded and found the teenagers nearby, according to a police log entry on the incident. One of the teens reportedly “lied about his name because he was wanted” then, when the officers told them they were under arrest, the teen allegedly “fled on foot then jumped into the Skookumchuck River to avoid capture,” according to the police log.

“After nearly drowning, an officer got into the water to arrest/rescue him and the juvenile punched the officer in the face,” according to the police log.

Both juveniles were arrested and were booked into the Lewis County Juvenile Detention Center pending charges. The stolen property was recovered, according to the Centralia Police Department.
