T-Birds Surge in District Semifinals

The Tumwater soccer team shrunk its margin for error with a quiet half, trailing at the break in its 2A District 4 quarterfinal at Hockinson. But once the Thunderbirds got going in the second half, there was no stopping them, and they rolled to a 4-1 win to start postseason play.

It didn’t take long out of halftime for Tumwater to flip the script, with Pierce Yates leveling things at 1-1 in the 45th minute.

From there, the score stayed tied for over 20 minutes, but in the 67th, Perry Lower put the guests ahead 2-1.

Hockinson had a chance to tie things up in the 69th minute from the penalty spot, but Tumwater keeper AJ Heichelbech came up with a nice save to deny the Hawks. The Thunderbirds got right into their counterattack, and less than 60 seconds later, Gavin Cuoio made it 3-1 on the break.

Cuoio iced the game in the 76th minute for a six-minute brace.

Tumwater moves on to the district semifinals, where they’ll face 2A EvCo champs Aberdeen in a winner-to-State match. The Bobcats took both regular season matchups against the T-Birds this spring, 3-1 and 2-1.
