T-Birds Earn Road Sweep at Centralia

The Centralia volleyball team fell to Tumwater in three straight sets at home on Thursday, 25-15, 25-18, 25-13.

Things started off out of whack for both sides, trading miscues and errors in a way that kept Centralia within punching distance for a bit.

“The first set was kind of a mess for both sides with missed serves and weird errors,” Centralia coach Marti Smith said. “We were right in that first set with Tumwater, and it was like once we got to the halfway point, they went on a run and we just could not climb back in.”

From there, both teams started to settle in, and the T-Birds pulled away after a better-played second set.

Come the third, Smith had to shuffle her lineup due to injuries, calling upon Selah Calkins and Mckenna Smith to play extended minutes, while also moving other starters to new positions.

Gracie Schofield led Centralia with 11 digs, while Lauren Wasson had eight. Tatum Johnston racked up five block assists.

Peyton Smith had 14 assists for the Tigers, and served up four aces.

“In the first set we didn’t serve well, but in the second and third sets we didn’t miss a serve,” Smith said. “We were serving tough at them, and making them make plays. We definitely made Tumwater have to earn their points.”

The win is Tumwater’s fourth sweep in a row; the T-Birds have dropped just one set so far in 2A EvCo play. No Tumwater stats were reported.

Tumwater (6-3, 5-0 league) is set to host Black Hills on Tuesday. Centralia (5-4, 2-3 league) will go to Rochester.
