In its first defeat of the young season, the Tumwater boys basketball team fell in its second game of the Hardwood Invite at Garfield High School to 4A Davis, 73-52.
The Thunderbirds turned the ball over 24 times against the Pirates’ press and shot just 7 of 25 from deep in the loss, erasing any hope for a comeback after a eight-point halftime deficit.
Andrew Collins led the T-Birds with 16 points, and Luke Brewer had 12 points to go along with five steals, eight rebounds, and five assists, but the turnovers and poor shooting from deep made it hard to keep up with a Davis squad that was redhot from distance in the first half.
The Pirates made four 3-pointers in the opening quarter, and started the second and third quarters on short runs to build up a lead. Tumwater pulled the deficit to just 10 in the fourth quarter after a 8-0 run to start the frame, but turned it over one too many times to make it up completely in the non-league loss.
The Thunderbirds will take on the loser of 4A Skyline and 3A Garfield Monday at 5:30 p.m. in a consolation matchup.
