Slow Start Dooms Cards in Loss to Ducks

Scoring just six points in the opening frame, the Winlock girls basketball team couldn’t quite make a comeback in a 64-37 loss to Toutle Lake Thursday night in Central 2B League play.

The Cardinals got their offense going in the second and fourth quarters, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit in a loss.

Kindyl Kelly had 15 points and seven boards for the Cards, and Kiya Peppers added nine points and 11 rebounds to lead the way for Winlock.

“The team had a slow start,” Cardinals coach Dracy McCoy said. “But had spurts of strong play in the second quarter. We struggled with the press tonight and had a couple of key players get into foul trouble early on.”

Natalie Cardenas also earned praise from her coach, scoring four points and hustling for five rebounds and six steals.

Winlock returns to play against Naselle at home at Noon on Saturday.
