A winter outing turned tragic Thursday after a young woman riding on a sled towed by an ATV crashed into a pole on a snowy rural road.

Yamhill County Sheriff’s deputies and emergency responders rushed to the scene on Northeast Hagey Road outside Dundee about 3:20 p.m., according to authorities.

When they arrived, they found Lily Vanderhoff, a recent graduate of Newberg High School, dead at the scene. The 18-year-old had been riding on the sled. Several other current students at the school were also present.

Sheriff Sam Elliott told The Oregonian/OregonLive said he planned to speak with the grieving family later Friday.

The investigation is ongoing and will “take some time to complete,” he added.

The Newberg-Dundee School District is working to provide support to local students.
