Schulz and Justice Break Pe Ell Record at Lewis County Meet

A pair of school records for Pe Ell — in the same event — were among the host of impressive performances at Centralia High School’s Lewis County Invite here Saturday.

Trojan junior Tyler Justice set the Pe Ell school record in the triple jump with a mark of 42 feet, 6.5 inches, breaking Hank Robinson’s jump of 42-1 from 2011.

But only 12 minutes later, Pe Ell’s Josh Schulz broke the record again, as the senior hit 42-8.

It was one of three wins for Schulz on the afternoon. He also won the long jump by nearly two feet with a mark of 21-4.5, over W.F. West’s Josh Walters, who lept 19-4.75. Schulz capped the day with a win in the 200, running 23.49.

Justice, meanwhile, took first in both hurdle races, winning the 110-meters in 15.86 seconds and the 300 in 42.35. His triple jump mark is now second in the state’s 2B ranks this season — to, of course, his teammate.

Schulz also placed second in the 100, where he was edged by Napavine’s Connor Locke — by a slim margin of 11.63 seconds to 11.65.

Locke, who was second in the 200 in 24.09, teamed with brothers Chase and Cole Van Wyck and Noah Lantz to win the 4x100 relay with a time of 45.82.

Chase Van Wyck, a senior for the Tigers, won the shot put with a school-record toss of 55 feet, 7.25 inches— the best 2B mark in the state by over six feet — and was second in the discus in 124-2. Teammate Jacob Johnston won the discus at an even 135 feet.

In the high jump, Josh Kennedy of Rochester won in a personal-best 6 feet, 5 inches. The senior’s mark is among the 10 best in Washington among all classifications this year, according to Athletic.net.

Mossyrock’s Jess White won the 400 in 52.97. The senior, who has qualified for the state meet in each of the past three years, is hoping to improve on his seventh place finish last year.

“It felt good. Definitely did better than the last one,” White said. “My 200’s going well, but I’m working to get back in my 400.”

Rochester’s Journey Fournter continued his breakout season with a win in the javelin, as the senior threw 162-1. The mark was just short of his personal best of 162-9, set on Thursday, and he took third in the discus.

On the girl’s side, Napavine’s Mollie Olson, who had three top five finishes at last year’s state meet, won both hurdles events.

Olson took the 100 hurdles in 16.34, then came back to run 49.32 in the 300 hurdles. Both were season-bests in her third meet of the year.

“I was stutter stepping. It’s the corners that were hard,” Olson said, of the 300 meter race. “I need to work on that a little more.”

Olson also won the triple jump with a mark of 33-6.25, topping W.F. West’s Allie Haakenson, who jumped 30-7.75 for second.

Olson’s teammate Grace Hamre — a senior running high school track for the first time — won a pair of races, capturing the 100 in 12.71 and the 400 in 1:01.8

Emma Moon, a sophomore from W.F. West, won both the 1600 and 3200. Moon ran 5:43 in the 1600 to top Alicia Herrera of Mossyrock (5:50.13), then came back to win the 3200 in 12:34 over Centralia’s Makayla Erickson (13:30).

Josie Bowen took the shot put with a throw of 86-11. The senior, who placed sixth in the 2B state meet in that event last year, was also fifth in the discus with a mark of 80-5, behind winner Kaitlynn Johns of Centralia (89-9).

W.F. West will host Centralia and Tumwater in an Evergreen 2A Conference meet on Thursday.

Notes: W.F. West senior J.P. Guyer won the 1600 on the boys side in 4:44. … Local winners on the girls side included Toledo’s Courtney Moore (28.29) and Josie Bowen (shot put, 32-7), W.F. West’s Erika Brumfield (800, 2:34) and Emma Moon (1600, 5:43 and 3200, 12:34) and Napavine’s Karley Bornstein (javelin, 122-9.5) and Winlock’s Jessica Neal (high jump, 5-1). ... Willapa Valley’s Alicia Smaciarz won the pole vault by 2 ½ feet at 10 feet, 6 inches.
