Riverhawks Get Right Over Tigers

The Toledo softball team snapped a four-game skid Thursday, scoring in five of the seven innings to beat Napavine 13-6 on the road.

The Tigers out-hit the Riverhawks 11-9, but Toledo’s knocks were louder and more timely, and combined with five Napavine errors in the field to do more damage. Just six of the guests’ 13 runs were earned.

“We just gave away too may outs,” Napavine coach Josh Fay said.

Mialeigh Jurica led the game off with a triple, and a batter later, Abbie Marcil went yard to give the Riverhawks a 2-0 lead. Jurica and Kailea Lairson also hit doubles, and Candace Clark added a triple.

Toledo got its lead up to 7-0 after a four-run fourth before Napavine found its offense against Bethany Bowen. The Tigers ended up scoring six runs in the final four innings, but the Riverhawks kept their pace up with a four-run seventh.

“Those are adjustments we need to make sooner, but it was nice to see us making them,” Fay said.

Hannah Fay went 3 for 4 with a double and three runs scored. Hayden Kaut smacked a home run as part of a two-hit, three-RBI day, and Grace Gaul went 2 for 3.

Bowen earned the win for the Riverhawks, allowing six runs — three earned — on nine hits and two walks, while striking out five.

Toledo is set for a rare doubleheader with two league games Monday, taking on Kalama twice. Napavine will get a critical twin bill at Rainier, though only the first matchup will count toward the league standings.
