Relay sweep gives T-Bird girls home invite victory

Seven victories in total and a handful of top-three finishes spurred the Tumwater High School girls track and field team to claim the 59th Shaner Invite on Friday at Tumwater District Stadium with 160 points.

Cassidy Hedin and Reese Heryford ran all three relays that came away victorious. Ava Jones anchored the 400 relay to a time of 49.01 seconds, the second fastest in Class 2A. Those three plus closer Alexandra Broome ran 4:01.74 in the 1,600-meter relay that is the best time in 2A. Ashlyn Hufana was a part of both the 400 and 800 relays.

Jones swept the open 100 and 200 while Hedin ran 46.60 to claim the 300 hurdles. Kamryn Wilson leaped 31-11 to win the triple jump.

W.F. West was fourth with 63 points while Centralia (25), Rochester (23) and Black Hills (11) finished 10th-through-12th overall.

The Bearcats were paced by Amanda Bennett winning both the javelin and pole vault plus distance runner Ashlen Gruginski ran a new lifetime best of 11:35.88 to place second in the 3,200. For the Warriors, Merecedies Dupont recorded two new personal bests, including winning the open 400 in 59.35 seconds. She also placed top-three in the 100 and 200.

Centralia’s Elyse O’Dell recorded a pair of top-five finishes in the 1,600 and 3,200 while Jayden Krogness (shot put) and Desiray Crockett (100 hurdles) both finished fifth. Black Hills’ Anneliese Dale placed seventh in the 100 and 200 as well as anchored its seventh place 800 relay.



For the boys, Tumwater placed second in the team race behind Olympia with 139.5 points. The Thunderbirds’ quartet of Xavier Bunn, Cash Short, David Malroy and Blake Kirkpatrick dashed around the track to a time of 41.99 seconds in the 400 relay. That time is the best in 2A to this point.

Kirkpatrick claimed the open 100 in 10.77 seconds while Short and teammate Josh Schlecht went 1-2 in the 400. All three recorded new personal bests. Aaron Paul won the high jump while Bunn (200) and Vincent Giuntoli (discus) both placed second.

W.F. West was fourth with 40 points, Centralia and Tenino tied for eighth with 18 and Rochester rounded out the top-10 with 16.5 points. Black Hills finished the meet with nine points. Beavers hurdler Carson Schall won the 110 hurdles, 30 years after his dad won the event at Shaner for Yelm. Schall also placed top-three in the 300 hurdles.

For the Bearcats, Ryan Hilliker tied for the win with Timberline’s Porter Mroszczyk as both finished with a top clearance of 12-06 and had the same amount of misses throughout the day. Peyton Santiago took third in the javelin.

Rochester’s Gunnar Morgan recorded top-three placements in the 1,600 and 3,200 while Centralia’s Sam Volavola (discus) and Jacoby Corwin (high jump) each placed third. Black Hills was led by Ezra Harris’ fourth place performance in the javelin.
