A road matchup with third place in the SWW 2B North turned into a test of the Morton-White Pass football team’s defense as well as its depth, and T-Wolves couldn’t find quite enough answers to either question in a 48-34 loss to Raymond-South Bend on Thursday.
“It was not a defensive showcase, that’s for sure,” MWP coach Lee Metcalf said.
The Timberwolves came into the evening down one starting middle linebacker, and lost their other one in the middle of the game on an injury. Without the spine of its defense, MWP yielded up 20 points in the fourth quarter to let the Ravens run away with the game a little bit.
“Tonight was kind of a disappointment for me, being the defensive coordinator,” Metcalf said. “A lot of it was personnel; we’re not very deep, so we get a couple key guys out, and it really hurts us.”
RSB racked up 536 yards of total offense, 375 of which came on the ground. MWP, for its part, still ran for 183 and threw for 163 more, with Judah Kelly opening the air attack up a bit under center in the second half.
But one MWP interception and a couple of untimely, drive-killing penalties helped the Ravens steal a possession or two and take a second-quarter lead that they’d never give up.
“It was one of those things where neither one of us could stop each other, and once they got the lead, it was back and forth and we couldn’t catch up,” Metcalf said.
Carter Dantinne finished with three touchdowns and 186 rushing yards on 23 carries. Kelly went 6 for 10 for 135 yards and a touchdown pass to Hunter Hazen, and also scored once with his legs.
Finishing the season with the North’s No. 4 seed, the T-Wolves will go to Onalaska next Friday for their crossover.
