Rainier senior Selena Niemi placed 13th and the Mountaineers’ girls team was the top local squad with a seventh-place finish at the state cross country championships Saturday in Pasco.
Niemi took 13th place out of 77 runners in a time of 21:10. Senior Faith Boesch was 50th in a time of 24:05.90, junior Hailey Tyrell was 59th (24:50.70), freshman Emma Mathson was 65th (25:17.70) and senior Zoe Mathson was 66th (25:20.10). Pope John Paul 2 won the 2B state championship with 46 points.
Morton-White Pass junior Ayricka Hughes placed 41st in a time of 22:56. Toledo’s Karley Harris placed 49th (23:59.5).
On the 2A side, Tumwater girls placed 13th with 290 points. Sehome won the state championship with 64 points.
Thunderbird senior Amantea Lucia Amantea placed 45th in a time of 21:09.20. Olivia Ahrens placed 67th (21:38.10), Olivia Marty was 94th (22:09.10), Jesse Brumbaugh was 103rd (22:17.10) and Rachel Zahn was 127th (23:04.10).
W.F. West freshman Mercedes Ricks placed 106th in a time of 22:20.30.
On the boys side, in Class 2B, Morton-White Pass finished 11th as a team with 233 points. Liberty Bell won the state championship with 50 points.
MWP senior Asher Sympson led the T-Wolves with a 32nd-place finish (17:58.70). David Martinez was 45th (18:19.10), Hunter Brackett was 84th (19:20.70) and Eric Brown was 103rd (19:52.90).
Rainier’s Dylan Davis placed 37th in a time of 18:06.40, while teammate Ryan Doidge was 65th (18:54.20).
Mossyrock’s Hugo Wedam placed 35th in a time of 18:02.60, while teammate Chrisitan Paz Tapia finished 43rd in a time of 18:17.30.
For Toledo, freshman Treyton Marty was 63rd (18:53.30) and Connor Olmstead placed 76th (19:04.60).
On the 1A side, Tenino’s Carson Hart was 89th in a time of 18:30.70, while Tristan Van Bargen was 147th (19:56.40).
For 2A, Tumwater boys placed 11th with 274 points. Squalicum won the state championship with 77 points.
Thunderbirds’ junior John Hoffer led Tumwater with a seventh-place finish (16:17.10). Brendan Hamilton was 64th (17:38.40), Andrew Harnden was 105th (18:14.80), Nathan Klingelhoffer was 122nd (18:28.50), Mason Ball was 134th (18:46.90), Sawyer Hicks was 144th (18:58.10) and Xander Ickert was 148th (19:07.60).
For W.F. West, senior Henry Jordan was 130th in a time of 18:40.30. Rochester’s Levi Jennings placed 40th (17:20.60) and teammate Gabe Stuard was 135th (18:48.70). Centralia junior Devin Harrison placed 103rd (18:13.60).

As for the 3A state competition, Yelm took 10th place overall with a team score of 281. The first place trophy went to Bishop Blanchet High School, which scored 88.
