Rainier Alum Nubbe Named Big 12 Most Outstanding Freshman

Jeremiah Nubbe’s throws only got bigger in Texas.

The Rainier product, who set Washington high school records in the discus as a Mountaineer, took up the hammer in his first year as a Longhorn and immediately set about entering his name in the record books in Austin. For his efforts, Nubbe was named the Big 12’s most outstanding freshman in the conference’s end-of-year awards Thursday.

Nubbe’s last time out on the field saw him take home the Big 12 title in the hammer throw, with a huck of 69.56 meters (228 feet, 2 inches). That throw was the second-best in UT program history — Nubbe set that mark himself with his 69.65 meter (228 feet, 6 inches) throw earlier this season.

He also owns two more of the top-10 efforts in Texas history, and has already gotten into the top 10 in the discus as well.

Nubbe is set to compete against the best in the country next Wednesday, at the NCAA West Preliminary meet in Sacramento, Calif.
