Prep Boys Basketball: Hickle, Beavers Complete Rivalry Sweep

Posted

TENINO — The Warriors made a late run, but Tenino held on here Friday night to secure a 58-51 win over rival Rochester.

The win gives Tenino a sweep in the boys hoops installment of the Scatter Creek Showdown rivalry, which began with a 56-47 win on Dec. 13 in Rochester.

“It’s always great to get a rivalry win and it’s nice to finish out the year 2-0 against Rochester,” said Beaver coach Joe Chirhart.

Tenino had built a 49-35 lead after three quarters, though the Warriors heated up enough to bring it well into the single-digit range in the fourth frame.

“In the third quarter when we jumped out to a lead, we buckled down on defense,” Chirhart said. “We came out with the mindset that we want to get stops on defense and let our defense lead us to our offense.”

The Beavers’ 13 steals helped in that regard, though Chirhart noted the finish could have been more convincing.

“We played well, but I think we need to learn how to finish games,” he said. “I think this is the first time all year we got up to a 14- or 15-point lead, but we got complacent and started taking a bunch of 3s and stuff.”

Hickle’s 15 points led Tenino, and he contributed 15 of the Beavers’ 39 team rebounds.

Paxton Russell added 13 points, and Logan Brewer chipped in with 11. Tenino also recorded 13 steals.

The Beavers went 20 of 60 from the field (34 percent) and hit 16 of 27 foul shots, while the Warriors were just 4 of 15 (27 percent) at the free-throw line.

Landon Hawes led Rochester with 15 points.

Tenino (3-4) hosts Raymond on Saturday.

Rochester (0-8) plays at Shelton on Jan. 3.

Tyler Speck scored 15 points for W.F. West, which trailed just 32-30 at the break.

North Kitsap, however, held a 46-23 rebounding advantage, with five players over 6-foot-4 throwing a wrench in the Bearcats’ plans.

Kobe McMillian led North Kitsap with 22 points. Jonas La Tour added 18, Logan Chmielewski scored 17 and reigning Olympic League MVP Shaa Humphrey added eight for the Vikings, which went 30 of 61 from the field.

Cline, Cardinals Keep Vikings at Bay

MENLO — The Cardinals came out on top of a back-and-forth boys hoops matchup here Friday night in the Jack Q. Pearson Holiday Classic, holding off host Willapa Valley 67-63.

Bryce Cline led Winlock with 27 points, and the Cardinals watched a 17-point lead evaporate in the second half.

Chad Flemetis hit a pair of three-pointers in the final minute that each gave Willapa Valley the lead, but Winlock answered the first with a fastbreak bucket from Coleson Richendollar and the second with a three from Cline.

Junior guard Landon Tiemens hit the biggest shot for the Cardinals, however, knocking down the go-ahead three with less than 15 seconds left to put Winlock up for good.

Cline then sealed the win with a steal with about five seconds left. The senior point guard added eight rebounds and went 12 of 21 from the field.

“We’re lucky to survive,” Winlock coach Nick Bamer said. “We’re a pretty happy bunch right now.”

Richendollar added 13 points for Winlock, with Tiemens finishing with 11.

Logan Walker led Willapa Valley with 25 points, though the Vikings were without 6-foot-6 center Bo Buchanan. Allen Deniston added 15 for Valley.

Naselle Shoots Past Adna Late

MENLO — The Pirates saw a nine-point lead evaporate over the last 10 minutes here Friday, falling to Naselle 61-51 in the first day of action at the Jack Q. Pearson Holiday Tournament at Willapa Valley High School.

Braden Thomas led Adna with 22 points, with Chase Collins chipping in 14.

Naselle, however, caught fire with two minutes left in the third quarter and Adna up nine.

“It was an awful combination of bad turnovers by us, and they made 10 3s in the last 10 minutes,” Adna coach Luke Salme said. “Defensively, we weren’t very good in those 10 minutes, and offensively we had too many unforced turnovers.”

Kolby Glenn hit four 3s in the final 10 minutes for Naselle and Corey Gregory cashed in three. Glenn finished with 18 points and Gregory scored 19, helping the Comets outscore Adna 22-9 in the fourth frame.

The Indians (1-6) outscored Mossyrock 35-20 in the second half.

MWP Beats Kittitas to Open Road Trip

KITTITAS — The Timberwolves won a defensive battle here Friday, putting away the Coyotes 42-33 in the Kittitas Holiday HS Basketball Tournament.

Hayden Young and Elliott Smith each scored 11 to lead Morton-White Pass.

“Energy-wise, we looked good,” MWP coach Chad Cramer said. “We didn’t shoot it real well. It was a long trip over, so you’re not going to come out shooting the ball great, but we rebounded well.”

Smith and freshman Josh Salguero were both solid on the boards, Cramer pointed out, and the Timberwolves converted enough free throws down the stretch to hold off the defending State 2B champions.

The 33 points was Kittitas’ lowest point total of the season, and MWP improved to 4-4 — with just two home games so far — on the season.

“To do that in their gym was really nice to see,” Cramer said. “They’re working hard on these road trips.”

MWP plays Woodland at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday in their final tournament game.
